HISTORY
|
| |
|
The
city dates back to the fourth century B.C. and reached its
most glorious historical peak under the Seljuks when, in
1220, Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat made this former pirate hideout
his winter residence and a naval base for the empire. A
thirteenth-century fortress still crowns the headland while
the octagonal Red Tower and ancient shipyard dominate the
harbour. |

GEOGRAPHY

The
coast is protected by the vast Taurus range. Verdant mountains
and fertile plains surrounding Alanya are covered with red
pine, black pine, oak, cedar, banana, orange, lemon, tangerine,
grenadine and loquat trees. These, together with exquisite sandy
beaches, idyllic coves, canyons, rivers, waterfalls, forests
and caves create a fascinating landscape. |

CLIMATE

The
weather is sunny and warm all year round. Average sea temperature
is 22° C, providing for a nine month vacational season. |

picturesque bazaar, which is closed to traffic and open
until midnight, is a paradise of handicraft shops. Potential
souvenir purchases include leather and suede goods, hand-woven
wool and silk rugs and carpets, gold and silver jewellery,
semiprecious stones, meerschaum and onyx artefacts, mother-of-pearl
inlaid wooden furniture, brassware, copperware, glassware,
pottery, ceramics, embroidery, lace and beads. |
